Orgelpark opens with a sparkling programme on January 20, 2007
Amsterdam’s newest concert venue the Orgelpark, or literally Organ Park, intended for organists, composers and other artistes, was officially opened by Amsterdam’s mayor Job Cohen on January 20, 2007. The opening features a festive programme, with actors Ward Weemhoff and Harald Austbø ‘in conversation’ with the Orgelpark’s three organs, with a script by Jan Veldman and music from Vincent van Warmerdam.
A new composition will also be aired, composed specially for the Orgelpark’s three organs by Fred Momotenko. The Orgelpark, accommodated in the splendidly restored Parkkerk (church) monument in Gerard Brandtstraat in Amsterdam, is aimed at presenting the organ in a new light, thus according it a place in current musical activities. It will appeal to a broad audience, young and old, enthusiast and professional.
The Orgelpark is a distinctive addition to Dutch cultural life and also has emphatic international aspirations. It can accommodate some 450 visitors. The organ is the thread running through the varied Orgelpark activities programme with some 100 activities programmed each season, such as concerts for a variety of fans – of classical music (after 1870), jazz and improvised music. There will be concerts combined with other art forms, such as dance, mime and film. Master-classes, symposia and exhibitions will also be organised. Moreover, the Orgelpark will be utilised as a working area for young talent from Dutch and foreign conservatoires. And new compositions will be commissioned. Where formerly the organ was used primarily in service of the church building, in the Orgelpark the building is in the service of the organ and its music.
The organisation of the Orgelpark emphasises that people need to be able to feel at home there, and it wants to do anything to achieve that. Alongside the varied programme, the Orgelpark offers a splendid art deco ambience, an intimate concert hall with three impressive organs, beautiful and clear acoustics and a convivial foyer. Of paramount importance is a warm and personal atmosphere. The Orgelpark offers those who are interested the possibility of becoming a Friend, which offers benefits and discounts.
The Orgelpark is an initiative of the Stichting Utopa. This association developed plans in 2003 which owner Stadsherstel viewed as aligning seamlessly with the functional value of the Parkkerk. It also made the resources available to be able to realise and continue these plans. The church has now been thoroughly restored, as has its Sauer organ.
