Science in the Orgelpark

The Orgelpark greatly values science: artistic activities go hand in hand with rational reflection. In 2008, the Orgelpark started the Orgelpark Research Program. In 2010, the Chair Organ Musicology was reinstated at VU University Amsterdam. Hans Fidom currently holds this position at VU University. Most recently, in 2012, the Orgelpark initiated the Orgelpark Knowledge Program.

Orgelpark Knowledge Program

The Knowledge Program is meant for people that have an affinity with music and would like to know more about it. The program includes, for example: ‘Lecture concerts’ (with short explanations and anecdotes in-between the pieces); further information concerning the concerts; and on average four ‘colloquia’ per season (events on Saturday afternoon, with a lot of music and one or two speakers).

Past colloquia were about early 20th-century organists Albert Schweitzer and Jan Zwart. Both colloquia made use of a special function of the new digital console of the Sauer organ: the Orgelpark commissioned Kasia Szwed to 'translate' recordings of Schweitzer and Zwart into so-called MIDI files. These are files the Sauer organ can play, which allowed us to hear Schweitzer and Zwart play live, as it were.

Orgelpark Research Program

The Orgelpark Research Program is the musicological initiative of the Orgelpark. It addresses issues that play an important role in the Orgelpark’s programming, on a project basis. The working language of these projects is English because of their international focus. Each spring the Orgelpark organizes an international symposium lasting several days in the context of these projects.

An international improvisation project took place as part of the Research Program from 2008 to 2011. From 2012 to 2013 the Research Program ran the project ‘The Van Straten organ as a historical document’.

Organ Studies / VU University

The Chair Organ Musicology at VU University provides education (classes and custom tutorials), as well as the guidance of researchers employed at VU University and other institutes (such as at the moment the Catholic University of Leuven and the Royal Conservatoire in The Hague).

As a GastVriend of the Orgelpark you can attend the classes organized by Organ Musicology free of charge. Please find more information here or contact us.
