Colloquium

Study afternoon on the life and work of Jan Zwart, who laid the foundation for a typical Dutch way of accompanying congregational singing in reformed church services and the music surrounding it in the early 20th century. Zwart also introduced the organ to a large group of music lovers through live radio broadcasts. In all of this, he continually pointed out the rich heritage left behind by Dutch composers such as Sweelinck and Van Noordt.

Frits Zwart, known for his research into Willem Mengelberg, is putting the finishing touches to an extensive study of the life and work of Jan Zwart, which will be presented in November. This afternoon he will talk about his grandfather and his music, with particular attention to Jan Zwart's fascination for early music and his work as a choir conductor.

The colloquium's second part is a concert (4.15 pm). Jan Zwart will perform live: using original recordings, composer Kasia Szwed created computer files that make Zwart's way of playing reproducible for the hyper-organ of the Orgelpark. Organist Jaap Zwart (also a grandson) will also play the organs of the Orgelpark. Other compositions by Jan Zwart will be performed by him as well, in cooperation with Merel Vercamman (violin) and Francine van der Heijden (soprano).
