Ad Parnassum, under the direction of conductor Anthony Zielhorst, is striving to commission new choir music. This afternoon you will hear Jo Sporck's Requiem: Distance. In Distance, Jo Sporck pits two choirs against each other. They counter each other with excerpts from newspaper articles that appeared in both countries when Russian armies invaded Ukraine in February 2022. One choir sings in Russian, the other in Ukrainian. Initially, it sounds like shelling back and forth. But gradually they grow closer. They end with the word mir, which means peace in both Russian and Ukrainian. Sporck dedicates Distance to the victims of Vladimir Putin's regime and of wars. It is a requiem, but without the traditional elements of a requiem mass. He places two soloists, a tenor and a soprano, between the emotional outbursts of the choirs.
