Componistenportret Arnold Marinissen

Arnold Marinissen wrote a six-part Simone Weil cycle between 2022 and 2025. All compositions are based on texts by the French philosopher and activist Simone Weil (1909-1943), who was concerned with dilemmas such as the inhumane nature of factory work in the early 20th century. In order to gain deep insight into this issue, she worked as a factory worker herself during the 1930s. She wrote extensively about her experiences, considerations and vision of the future regarding factory work, in letters and essays, and in correspondence with factory directors.  The opening work of the cycle, La condition ouvrière, was written for the American Ox and Lamb Percussion Publications. Three of the works, Des bruits qui ne parlent pas, Un temps inhabitable and La racine du mal, were created thanks to a work grant from the Performing Arts Fund. Marinissen wrote the closing organ work Kairé on behalf of the Orgelpark.
