Now that the hyperorgan development is gaining pace, it seems safe to say that its main characteristic is pluriformity. Being able to combine sound resources (pipes) at will, as well as to control the wind flow to them – the two properties that discern hyperorgans from conventional pipe organs – appears to inspire all kinds of musicians and artists, many of whom never considered the organ an instrument they could work with before.  The results so far are promising, to say the least: not only do they create musics and other artworks considered impossible only a decade ago; they also establish new ways of music-making, including historically informed ones.

The 16th International Orgelpark Symposium aimed to give an impression of this pluriformity by inviting musicians from all over the world to share their ways of making music using pipe organ sound. Also, new hyperorgan projects were introduced by the very people that energize them; they join from all over Europe, and from the US. The third theme of the symposium is the way organ sound demands to be ‘re-understood’, now that the hyperorgan turn unveils it as a highly dynamic type of musical material; leading organ builders will share their thoughts and visions.

As always the symposium schedule allows sufficient time to lunch, take a walk, have dinner – and meet. If anything, the hyperorgan – the organ in general, in fact – needs a strong network. In order to be able to manifest itself as the instrument that mirrors 21st century culture better than any other, the (hyper)organ requires us to put its pluriformity at work – and bring it to the many audiences that yet don’t know they love it.
